All that matters is that you are making something you love, to the best of your ability, here and now. I hope this has sparked your passion for type design. Even if not, be proud for having stepped out of your comfort zone and tried something new.

Đăng-Khoa Phạm

I name this “under construction typeface” Prim, in Romanian, it means the first. So it’s the first typeface I ever made from scratch, from calligraphy to here.

I’m a freelance graphic designer whose interest is in typography, lettering and type. This workshop definately builds my love for type design, plus I love the way our host passionly talk about type and how it’s easy to follow.

I know it’s just 5 days, and I know it’s only 10% (or less) of making a typeface project, but I feel excited to dig into more, and be more “stupid”. All about this workshop is so vui <3

“Rạng" is a modern serif font designed as a mini-project for this type design class. Inspired by the word “Rạng“, which evokes the transquil, yet vibrant moment when the first rays of sunlight gently pierce the horizon. This typeface captures the essence of a calm, yet energetic beginning.

Its friendly and organic curves lend a sense of warmth, and appoachability, while the contemporary serif structure ensures versatility and elegance. “Rạng” is a celebration of quiet mornings and fresh starts, perfect for designs that aim to radiate subtle sophistication and a touch of optimism.

A playful mix of calligraphy and Apple’s print ads from the 80s is exactly what my typeface stands for. The five-day workshop, although it was brief, helped me reconnect with craft and create from scratch - something I felt I had lost along my professional journey.

I’m tentaively calling this lettering project “Freedom”. Honestly, when I started this workshop, typography was still quite unclear to me; this class has been a real journey of discovery. So, when I first put pen to paper, my sole aim was to create beautiful calligraphy without any specific concept in mind.

Much like Ms. Hương advised me on the first day “just let the letters lead you”, the typeface gradually took shape. Through this process, I developed a deeper understanding of typeface structure, learned to recongize the hallmarks of beautiful lettering, how to creatively develop a typeface, and, importantly, it rekindled my enthusiasm after a period of uncertainty about what truly excites me in graphic design.

The demo was created for this workshop. Our process involved designing groups of letters, both lowercase and uppercase, based on the participants calligraphy sheets.

The workshop spanned five days, with each session lasting approximately four hours. I deeply appreciate the tremendous effort and dedication the participants brought to this short but intensive experience.

Like everyone else, I’m still learning and growing. My main goal is to inspire and encourage those looking to pursue type design further—helping them push their boundaries and go beyond the norm.
